The decision to ‘go public’ about your mental health should not be taken lightly. However, there are many positive benefits. Free yourself from negativity by sharing your story.
Because mental health disorders usually have an effect of isolating individuals from their world, there isn’t much sharing taking place. So, let’s think about this quote for a moment. Sharing creates a miracle in the cycle of reciprocity with the giver also becoming the receiver.
To clarify, here’s what happens when you begin to share your mental health journey:
- You increase your comfort level with these disorders while also helping others change their perceptions.
- By sharing your fears, you become less fearful.
- The more you describe your self-doubt, the easier it is for others to help you reframe those thoughts.
- By opening up your feelings of shame and/or guilt, these two non-productive emotions fall by the wayside.
There are so many positive effects of opening up and sharing yourself and your disorders with others. So, what will it take for you to take the plunge to discuss your lived experience? You won’t know how easy it is until you give it a try. I can tell you this from personal experience–not only do others respect and admire you more, but they also learn in the process.
Fortunately, you will be able to watch miracles unfold before your eyes. You will free yourself of negative thought processes. But also, but you will inspire others to understand mental health disorders in a new way. Not bad for a day’s achievements—go for it!
