Simple Ways to Find Wellness When Depression & Anxiety Resurface
By Carol Kivler on September 30, 20190When depression and anxiety grab you, they lock joy away in a dark closet. What keys can unlock the door? In addition, what can return your ability to smile and enjoy life again?
In the big picture, working toward wellness is your most powerful weapon against what I call “joy robbers.” There are simple ways to find wellness when depression and anxiety resurface.
Stop Dwelling on the Past and Seize the Day
By Carol Kivler on September 23, 2019Many of us living with mental health disorders frequently look back over past episodes. There are times when we find ourselves encased there as if our feet were stuck in concrete, unable to move. What has happened in our lives has happened. Therefore it can’t be undone, no matter how hard we try. It’s time to bring out a jackhammer and break out your feet from the concrete that’s been enclosing them. There is nothing you can do to change the past. Instead, try directing your focus toward changing the future. Stop dwelling on the past and seize the day.
Your Life Has Purpose, Even with a Mental Illness Diagnosis
By Carol Kivler on September 9, 2019Despite what you may believe, your life has a purpose, even with a mental illness diagnosis.
Currently, approximately 46.6 million Americans experience mental illness each year. So, there is no better time for those of us with mental health disorders to speak up and help others.
Stop Negative Thoughts From ‘Looping’ In Your Mind
By Carol Kivler on September 2, 2019Like like most individuals, you may have “broken records” engrained in your memory from days past. Hurtful or limiting statements others made ended up stored in the “closet of your mind.”
I’ve never met a person who can’t recall one or two of their own “broken records.” Don’t let negative self-talk play in your head on repeat. Drown it out using hope. In addition, stop negative thoughts from looping in your mind.
Self-Kindness Starts and Ends with You
By Carol Kivler on August 27, 2019Without realizing it, self-talk impacts our self-worth more than damaging words from others. Self-kindness starts and ends with you.
A phrase I have heard describes the human condition as “the walking wounded.” Stop for a moment to consider the impact of this statement.
People Care Is Similar to Plant Care
By Carol Kivler on August 19, 2019I often use a plant analogy to drive home to leaders what their employees need to thrive at work. People care is similar to plant care. Plants can survive with sun and water. However, if you want them to thrive you need to fertilize, prune, and repot.
To clarify, people are like plants. Employees need to be fertilized by showing appreciation and providing positive feedback.
Ask for What You Need
By Carol Kivler on August 12, 2019This week as I was coaching a number of executives, I was reminded of a simple yet essential communication strategy. Ask for what you need. Then why is it so hard to ask?
Comfort in asking questions comes with maturity of thought. We are born totally dependent on others to help to fulfill our needs. Then we find ourselves becoming independent. We believe we can survive on our own without the help of others.
