People Care Is Similar to Plant Care

People Care Is Similar to Plant Care

I often use a plant analogy to drive home to leaders what their employees need to thrive at work. People care is similar to plant care. Plants can survive with sun and water. However, if you want them to thrive you need to fertilize, prune, and repot.

To clarify, people are like plants.  Employees need to be fertilized by showing appreciation and providing positive feedback.

In addition, it’s crucial to recognize their strengths and talents.  Prune by providing constructive feedback and holding them accountable.  Finally, they may need to be repotted/empowered with new responsibilities and/or authority. Additionally, utilize their ideas, or give them opportunities to mentor junior employees.

Individuals with mental health disorders can also utilize the plant analogy to explore their own needs toward wellness.  How you may ask?

Fertilizing

  • Utilize positive self-talk and affirmations
  • Celebrate strides toward wellness
  • Display gratitude for everyday things

Pruning

  • Get rid of poor habits
  • Stay away from toxic individuals
  • Drop the victim mentality

Repotting

  • Move out of your comfort zones
  • Read inspiring stories of others in recovery
  • Re-engage in hobbies that make you happy
  • Help others by volunteering

Consider purchasing a plant as a reminder to care for yourself as much as you care for the plant.  This small reminder can be a prompt for you to start making the changes you need to help your own mental wellness.

Reflection Question

What ways can you think of to fertilize yourself more?
