We reside in a society of quick fixes, however, there are no permanent fixes for a mental health disorder. These are just unrealistic expectations. First, it seems to take forever to even receive a proper diagnosis of a mental health disorder. In addition, there are trials and tribulations of medication changes and adjustments. The entire process is frustrating, disappointing, and overwhelming. So, what’s a person to do?
The answer is acceptance—acceptance of an illness with no permanent solution. For me, depression and anxiety respond to the latest and greatest medication cocktail along with ECT treatments. Unfortunately, this cycle repeated itself 4 times. However, what’s the alternative—not engaging in a life to be lived? No thank you.
Thinking about permanence, I ask myself what in life is permanent anyway? Relationships change, financial security changes, careers change, moods/attitudes change.
In addition, our likes and dislikes change and the list goes on and on. Why should we expect our level of wellness not to change? This in itself is an unrealistic expectation.
So, here’s the deal—when your mental health starts to spiral down and triggers start appearing, get the help you need. Adjust your mental health treatment plan if necessary. Otherwise, you may find yourself struggling much longer than you really need to.
Reflection Question
What triggers of your illness spiraling do you need to watch out for?
