Sustained Recovery–A Solid Commitment

Sustained Recovery–A Solid Commitment

Sustained recovery is a solid commitment to ongoing processes and constant changes.  For those of us dealing with mental health disorders, we are all too familiar with the ups and downs of our mental well- being. Furthermore, we are frequently impacted by medication changes.  At other times we may need a complete overhaul.

Recently I came across a definition of recovery from SAMSHA, (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration). SAMSHA is the agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that leads efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation.

“Recovery is a process of change through which individuals improve their health and wellness, live a self-directed life, and strive to reach their full potential.”  What a self-empowering way to view recovery. Recovery, however, isn’t a destination. It’s a journey, one day at a time.

Improving our health and mental wellness requires ownership and personal accountability.  Unfortunately, no one can do it for us.  Are you ready to take up the commitment of sustained recovery?  Start today by making better life choices. Hold yourself personally responsible for striving to reach your full potential.  Life is yours for the taking. All you need to do is go for it!

Reflection Question

What’s the first healthier life choice you can make today?
