Don’t let the fear of recurring depression keep you from living your life in recovery. Instead, follow a few simple tips to prevent recurring depression.
If you are like many of us with mental health disorders, you’ve been told that you will be challenged with your illnesses throughout your life. This is especially true if you have endured several episodes.
What happens when you are warned about these recurring episodes is that you become “hyper-vigilant”. And on the constant lookout for the slightest deviation of your wellness. The result– you miss out on living and enjoying the periods of recovery and wellness that actually do take place in between episodes.
So how do you keep living in spite of the possibility that you might need to face the “beast” (the word I prefer to call my depression and anxiety)?
- Stop dwelling on the thought that the illness may return. Push away those unsettling thoughts when they surface.
- Start living and enjoying life again in spite of your illness. Take one wellness day at a time.
- Begin to get back to enjoying the elements of life that make you happy.
- Remain grateful for the well days and appreciate the opportunity to live life.
- Continue to take good care of yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally.
- Seek the help you need early if and when the “beast” shows its ugly side.
Don’t become a person who spends so much time watching his/her health that you haven’t the time to enjoy your wellness and recovery.
Trust me—life passes by too fast to miss out on the good days!
