Hopelessness is both all-consuming and life-threatening. Yet, because hopelessness is a symptom of all mental illnesses, it is essential that we recognize courage is the antidote to hopelessness.
Those of us dealing with a mental health disorder know what it feels like to be hopeless. It’s that dreaded feeling that we have nothing left to live for.
We need courage to face the demons and darkness of an illness that robs us of our God-given right to share our talents with others.
So how do you go about embracing the courage to break the cycle of hopelessness?
- Remind yourself that “hopelessness” is a symptom of the illness, not a permanent condition.
- Seek help and support the moment the “ugly head of hopeless” appears.
- Pray for the courage and trust that you are not alone. God stands beside you.
- Recall coming through a past episode and recapturing your life.
I define the people I know who have battled their illnesses for years as courageous survivors. To clarify, they have fought the good fight with hopelessness and won again and again. Let’s learn to acknowledge each other’s courage and appreciate the results—a life that is to be lived and shared!
