Interview With Ali Gorman of 6ABC News – Philadelphia

Carol Kivler was interviewed on  Philadelphia’s ABC affiliate on October 28, 2010. Ali Gorman, host of the popular segment “Healthcheck,” which airs on 6 ABC News at 11 PM daily, featured Carol’s story of her successful treatment with electroconvulsive therapy for clinical depression that did not respond to medication. Watch the video below to see as Carol works to break the stigma of depression and de-mystify shock therapy.

When Carol was first offered electroconvulsive therapy or ECT, commonly known as shock therapy, the first thing that came to mind was  the barbaric treatment portrayed in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” where ECT is used as a punishment.

But, as Psychiatrist Dr. Johnny O’Reardon of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania observed, what is in the movies, is not reality.
